What is the Social Impact Award?

SIA Award Ceremony

A year-long program developed by the University of Vienna in 2009 to empower today’s youth to take action as social entrepreneurs and informed change-makers. Impact Hub Geneva implements the Social Impact Award in Switzerland following a similar timeline and structure while focusing on local needs and opportunities by partnering with local universities, actors, experts and entrepreneurship networks.

In Q1 SIA offers free and open-to-all workshops in several large Swiss cities empowering young people directly with tools and techniques to lay the foundation for their impact-driven projects and raising awareness about social entrepreneurship; 'doing good, while doing well' concept.

Idea competition

SIA Switzerland then launches an under-30 idea competition: it invites under-30s living in Switzerland to submit their inspirational ideas and projects to address global challenges locally. The projects are selected based on social impact, degree of innovation and feasibility.

Finalists’ incubation

12 finalists will have access to a 10-week incubation program including bi-weekly entrepreneurial workshops, individual coaching from business coaches, individual mentoring sessions from senior employees of renowned corporations, access to a creative workspace & international networks!

Winners’ ongoing support

The 4 most promising projects will be awarded the Social Impact Award which includes participation in the SIA International Summit, a gathering of more than 150 young social innovators from 18 countries in Europe and beyond; seed funding of up to CHF 4’000; 3 months of tailor-made support in a stimulating environment & access to unique learning opportunities.

Why entrepreneurship for youth?

Job market evolution

The job market is undergoing a period of drastic change, with technological advances changing the skills needed by the workforce of the future. Entrepreneurial, innovative and adaptable mind-sets and skills will be key in order to remain competitive on the job market.

Active citizens needed

The world faces a growing litany of complicated challenges: overpopulation, climate change, migrant crises and growing inequality just to name a few. The world needs individuals who not only have the desire to make the world a better place but also have the knowledge and skills to do so.

Youth ambitions

Swiss students dream of becoming entrepreneurs, but only a few of them follow this path at the end of their studies. Youth entrepreneurial activity in Switzerland (18-24 years) is the lowest of all comparable countries, 6.2% compared to 16.8% in Germany. This low entrepreneurial rate among the youth is more an issue of lack of knowledge rather than low motivation.
